Speech assistants are part of the operating system in almost all new smartphones. But, according to an analysis by Deloitte, they are not really used. They studied and published this year’s technology trends their Deloitte TMT Predictions 2019 (PDF) study. The trend numbers are different for smart speakers like Amazon Alexa, Google Home or Apple HomePod. They are placed in the living room, in the center of the action and voice commanded to play music, give weather forecasts or the news.

According to the Deloitte analysis, the number of smart speakers worldwide will grow to 250 million next year. Almost 98 million were expected to be sold in 2018, and by 2019 the number will swell to 164 million units. On average, consumers spend around $ 45 per loudspeaker, which is the main reason for the Amazon’s echo very low price. Next year's projected total value is of about $ 7 billion.

Fastest growing connected devices

"According to analysis, by the end of 2019, a respectable 250 million smart speakers will be in use. This makes networked loudspeakers the fastest growing technology in the field of connected devices, "explains Barbara Edelmann, Partner at Deloitte Austria. "Especially in non-English-speaking markets, there is still great potential for growth." The analysis shows that Alexa and Co are currently being used mainly in the US and China (and mainly in urban areas). To put the numbers in perspective: the market for smartphones is much larger. In the third quarter of 2018 alone, 355 million smartphones were delivered worldwide. For the year 2018 the sales of roughly 1.5 billion pieces are expected.
